Accessible Toilet Design Guide for Architects & Designers

Accessible Toilet Design Considerations for Designers (1/2)

ACCESSIBLE TOILET DESIGN GUIDE: CHECKLIST FOR DESIGNERS 1/2*

The checklists present some of the most important considerations for DESIGNERS that must be addressed and thought through when planning the functional bathroom. The key to an accessible bathroom is a systematic assessment of the room’s possibilities and the needs of both the user and caregiver.

☐ Will the room be used by one OR several different users?

☐ What are the rules or legislation relating to accessibility in the built environment which are in effect?

☐ Will users and care givers benefit from flexible sanitary fittings?

☐ Have you provided for sufficient space required for a caregiver AND a user in the bathroom?

☐ How ambulant are the user/s?

☐ What is the level of assistance required for patient transfers?

☐What type of building is this? Mall? Residence? Educational institution? A hospital? Nursing home? A hotel? Sports complex? Transport terminal? Theme park?

The first distinction to make is between one or several users. In the case of a single user, the layout must be adapted to take into account both current and future physical capabilities. In the case of several users, even more flexibility is required. It is crucial that the way in which such a room is fitted out makes it possible to carry out many changes each day, easily and quickly.
